Earlier this week mmmcrafts posted this free template to make some really adorable Mother’s Day cards.  I think they would also be great for a new baby, and by using two large birds instead of the mom and baby for a wedding or ‘miss you friend’ card.  They are really easy to put together, and only use basic supplies.

You will need:

  • scissors
  • double stick tape or tape runner
  • foam pop up squares or dimensional dots (optional)
  • colored paper
  • blank card
  • envelope
  • wiggly eyes (optional)

Print off the template, and cut out the patterns.  Trace each shape onto colored paper, and cut out.  *Crafting tip: Since you already have all of the supplies out, go ahead and trace enough pieces to make 2-3 cards.  It won’t take much longer, and you will have a cute handmade card ready for another card giving occasion.*  Tape the feet to the back of each bird body.

If you are doing the owls, glue on the eyes and beaks.  If you are doing the doves, draw on the eyes.  I love to googly eyes on the owls!  I used a 3d dot to put the beaks on one card, and liked it a lot better than gluing it flat.

Using your 3d dots, attach the baby bird to the mom.  Next add baby’s wing, and then mom’s wing.

Glue a rectangle of colored paper to the front of your card.  Use 3d dots to place birds on the paper.  I offset my birds to the left a little bit, and added a ribbon sentiment on the right.

So cute!  The internet makes it so easy to benefit from the creativity of others – I would have never thought of this on my own.

The wiggly eyes on the doves look a little weird compared to the drawn on eyes, but they aren’t removable.
